Nutrigenomics, nutrigenetics and precision nutrition.

Café Manna · Educational guide · Published · Updated

How does food interact with gene activity? Can inherited variation help explain different responses to a diet? These are related questions, but they are not interchangeable—and a DNA report is not a guaranteed recipe for health.

Service status: education and future pathway. Café Manna is not offering genetic testing, genetic-report interpretation or predictive-risk consultations. No genetic-test bookings, samples or payments are accepted.

Three terms worth separating.

Nutrigenomics

Here we use it for how dietary exposures interact with gene activity and biological pathways. Some scientific resources use the term more broadly for both directions of gene–diet interaction.

Nutrigenetics

The inherited-variation side: how differences in DNA may relate to responses to nutrients or dietary patterns. An association is not automatically a useful individual prescription.

Precision nutrition

Research that combines relevant individual information to understand dietary responses. It overlaps with personalised nutrition and can consider routine, diet, metabolism and other factors—not only genes.

Does adding DNA information improve a diet plan?

The answer depends on the specific intervention, population and outcome. Food4Me found improvements with personalised advice but no added overall benefit from the genotype information tested. DIETFITS did not find that its tested genotype pattern identified who lost more weight on the two diets compared.

A 2026 trial with 43 participants reported some improvements over 12 weeks with genotype-informed education. The intervention group also received more personalised counselling and contact than the control group, so the study cannot isolate the contribution of genetic information. The small sample, unvalidated test panel and delayed trial registration further limit interpretation. This does not establish a universal DNA diet, long-term disease prevention or benefits from Café Manna’s programme.

Genetic susceptibility is not certainty.

Genetic risk information concerns probability in a defined context. A susceptibility result does not, by itself, mean a person has a disease or will develop it. Family history also provides context, but does not measure a person’s genotype.

Some genetic tests have established diagnostic uses in clinical care; that does not make every consumer nutrition report diagnostic. Interpretation depends on the actual test, relevant population, validation and professional expertise. A risk score should not be used to stop prescribed treatment or ignore symptoms.

What would a responsible advanced pathway need?

Before offering a test-based programme, its purpose, laboratory arrangements, validation, responsible professionals, consent, privacy terms and practical interpretation must be clear. Research findings and laboratory experience alone do not establish that a clinical service is ready.

Café Manna’s advanced DNA-informed pathway remains future-facing. This guide is educational; it does not offer genetic screening, diagnose conditions or promise disease prediction. You can explore currently available meal and personalisation enquiries without a DNA test.
